Asking yourself “what do you want to be when you grow up?” doesn’t always provide the right answers. When you have no idea where to start looking for your next job, the idea of beginning a search sounds daunting. But that is okay and there are ways to kick your job search into high gear, and learn what you really want in the process. Here are some strategies that can work for you.

  • Consider your strengths.

If you don’t even know what you want to do, it can be hard to narrow your focus in a productive and constructive way. So, take some time to consider your strengths. What are you particularly good at? And, once you know that, what do you like to do most? Where do these things meet? Map this out and it can help you find a place to start.

  • Build your online reputation.

If your problem is not what you want to do but finding ways to apply with companies who want to pay you to do it, start with the internet. More and more organizations are looking at social media to find their next star employee. Buy your domain name and create a website. Use it as a platform to write a blog that can share your expertise with an audience. Then, join the social media sites to help you spread the word.

  • Join groups on LinkedIn.

Now that you’re on the internet, and hopefully have created and optimized your LinkedIn professional profile, it is time to maximize your reach. Join groups in your area or for your field of interest. Many business owners, recruiters, and other hiring managers also join these groups to find talent for their organizations. You can’t be found if you’re not visible.

  • Commit even when it is challenging.

It won’t be easy. Rarely will people knock on your door and offer you the job of your dreams. But if you put in the work to help yourself, you’ll be surprised to find the rewards you can reap. On top of these options, you can also sign up with a local staffing service that can help match you with a company based on your skills and interests. If you don’t find something right away, keep trying.
