Career Rut? Take Action

Career Rut? Take Action

Do you feel stuck in your current job? What is the next level for you? If you feel like things are not advancing and you’re not sure how to take the next step, here are some ideas to dig yourself out of that rut and take action. Stagnation doesn’t have to be an inevitable part of your career so consider these ways to make a change.

  1. Develop your goals. It has probably been a while since you really thought about what you do and what you want to do. In some ways this is like answering the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It is time to sit down and think through your answer. Pull out a pen and paper and create two lists. The first list will be your skills and experience. Include everything from customer service to PowerPoint presentations. The second list will be what you really want to do. If you work in an office now but you’ve dreamed of being part of the non-profit sector, write that down. Once you have both lists you can see how your skills and your desires can work together to take you to the next level.
  2. Take a test drive. So, let’s say that you want to transition into non-profit work and more specifically you want to be a part of event planning. However, for the last 10 years you’ve been working as an administrative assistant for a corporation. How do you get this new experience? The best solution is to volunteer. Try out a few different options based on what you want to do and determine the best fit for your personality and your experience. Talk with leaders in the industry about how they transitioned. Make connections. This is the preparation time that can help you break out of your rut.
  3. Pursue training and certification. Once you learn more about the industry that you want to be a part of it is time to sharpen your skills to become marketable to those companies. When you’ve spoken to leaders in the industry and made connections find out what pieces of the puzzle are missing in your background. Check out local colleges, tech schools, or certification tests to add these skills and abilities. Once you add these to your resume you may be unstoppable.
